Speed Runs

Speed running (trying to complete a videogame in the fastest time possible) is almost as old as gaming itself. At least, it's almost as old as games that have a definite end point or staging points, since speedrunning a game with infinitely repeating levels is Sisyphean.

Speed run of Super Mario Bros. done on October 9 2004. Available in normal and high quality. Author's comments: This is the cleanest, best looking SMB run I've done, although some levels can be finished slightly faster with better tactics so I estimate that I could do better by five to seven tenths overall. Easily the best part is in 8-3 with the Hammer Bros (I was very surprised I didn't die). Enjoy :)

Speed run of Chrono Cross in 50 segments, with two verions of the 50th segment to get both good and bad endings. Available in three versions: normal, high, and low quality DivX. Author's comments: First of all, I'd like to thank Professor_Plump, Genji, Arrow, and Enhasa for all the help/support they gave me. Of course, thanks to Radix, Nate, and everyone who posted in the topic as well. Thanks go to the people behind ePSXe (and plug-in makers) as well, since, without that program, testing...

Speed run of Final Fantasy 3 in 32 segments completed on May 5 2005. Available in 3 versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high quality. Author's comments: This run is quite similar to my last Final Fantasy 3 speed run. I felt compelled to do it over because the previous run was missing a 2-minute Tyrannosaur segment. I said of my last run that it was in too many segments for my taste, and this one is even more segments. That's because I decided to fight nothing but Tyrannosaur...

Available in five versions: low/normal quality DivX, and normal/high/low quality H.264 MPEG-4. Author's comments: This is my first speed run and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Speed run of Fire Emblem for GBA in 35 segments completed on December 2 2005. Available in three versions: low, normal and high quality. Author's comments: Hey. I started this run on August 13th, and didn't finish it until December 2nd. That's insane! As far as I know, this delay was my fault. First of all, I should thank everyone who wanted to see this run and helped contribute ideas. Speed run of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes with 100% item collection in 24 segments, completed on March 31 2005. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60 fps high quality. Author's comments: I started this run on December 17, a mere one month after this game came out. At that point, my goal was a time of under three hours, and I doubted whether that was even realistic. 10-segment speed run of Metroid Prime completed on December 9, 2007 collecting all items in what is thought to be an order intended by the game's designers - a so-called "natural route run". Available in low, normal, high and insane quality. Author's commentary: This run is not a real speedrun, it is very sloppy and crappy, it is as sloppy done as my natural route low% 29% 1:53. Author's comments: Tip for the viewer: DivX/XviD can't cope with the detail levels and high motion of this game so I can't recommend anyone to watch them. Speed run of Chrono Trigger in 34 segments completed on October 26 2005. Timing note: uses game timer at last seen moment in final part plus remaining real time until final damage on Lavos. Speed run of Splinter Cell for PC on hard mode in 10 segments completed on September 16 2005. Available in normal and high quality. Author's comments: This is my third speed run. I did two Kotor speed runs and felt like moving on to something different. Splinter Cell is a game that I absolutely love. I got it free with my video card and loved it ever since. This is a straight speed run. I dont try to avoid alarms, except where necessary. I looked at the run for the playstation that was up, but...

Low% speed run of Metroid Prime with 23% item collection in 19 segments, completed on November 23 2003. 23% is considered the "easy low%" as it still collects the Boost Ball, which is very difficult to skip. Was the fastest 23% game until April 19 2004. Available in both mpeg4 and DivX versions. Author's comments: Since practically no one is concerned with low percent speed runs, I have somewhat of a monopoly on the category. As a result of this, I can't really compare my final time...

100% speed run of Super Metroid, completed on June 4 2004. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high quality. Author's comments: Hello. This is my 0:55 100% speed run for Super Metroid, played on the console. I am very pleased with this run, as it beats my old time of 1:00 as well as the previous record of 0:58. Lots of new stuff was done in my run; many things thought up by other players, some by myself. I'd like to thank several people who helped me during this...

This TAS is an improvement of 5 frames (0.072 s) over megamanpc-tas-1_48_226 . The only speed difference is sub-frame inputs during stage select and the beginning of stages, which saves 1 frame in each of: Sonic Man stage select Sonic Man beginning of stage Volt Man stage select Dyna Man stage select Dyna Man beginning of stage Sub-frame inputs can give you control of Mega Man 1 frame earlier at the beginning of Volt Man's stage, but it doesn't save time because you have to wait for the...

Author's comments: Firstly, a big thanks to Marshmallow, for doing his D2LOD speedrun, which got me into wanting to do it myself.
